Road to the Kentucky Derby

The 2016 Kentucky Derby betting will take place over the course of four major sets of racing dates. To start the Road to the Kentucky Derby and the Run for the Roses is the Kentucky Derby Prep Schedule which takes place in the latter months of 2012 until the start of 2016.

Following the Kentucky Derby Prep Season Schedule is the Kentucky Derby Championship Series. The Kentucky Derby Championship Series is made up of seventeen total races which are distances of one mile or longer on dirt and synthetic surfaces only.

Schedule for first leg of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series:

First Leg of Series race finishers earn:

  • 1 st 50 points
  • 2 nd 20 points
  • 3 rd 10 points
  • 4 th 5 points

Schedule for second leg of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series:

Second Leg of Series race finishers earn:

  • 1 st 100 points
  • 2 nd 40 points
  • 3 rd 20 points
  • 4 th 10 points

Schedule for Kentucky Derby Championship Series Wild Card Races:

Wild Card race finishers earn:

  • 1 st 20 points
  • 2 nd 8 points
  • 3 rd 4 points
  • 4 th 2 points

And that concludes the Road to the Kentucky Derby Schedule, and then it's off to the Run for the Roses on May 4 th , 2016 at Churchill Downs presented by Yum Brands and will be televised on NBC.

Below is a list of general racing dates for Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes races. Since the graded stakes earnings format no longer applies, the majority of these race dates will simply be used by thoroughbred horses and trainers as prep races for the races listed above.
